Your CV is the first impression you give to a potential employer, especially in fast-paced sectors like manufacturing, heavy industry, or energy, where hiring decisions are often made quickly.

If you’re a mechanical or multi-skilled engineer looking to stand out, here are five practical ways to make your CV work harder for you.

Put your certifications up front

Many of the clients we work with want engineers who are compliant and ready to hit the ground running. That means your certifications should be easy to find, right at the top of your CV.

Include things like:

NVQ Level 3 or higher in Mechanical Engineering

Apprenticeships or time-served status

IOSH or health and safety qualifications

Welding codes, pressure systems training, confined space, or lifting certifications (if relevant)

Be specific and include issue/expiry dates where possible.

2. List tools, equipment, and environments you\’ve worked in

Don’t just say “general maintenance experience”. Break it down.

Whether you’ve worked with hydraulics, gearboxes, pumps, rotating machinery, steam systems, or pipework and fabrication, make sure it\’s listed. The same goes for environments, steel, chemical, water, waste, FMCG, MOD, all help paint a clearer picture of your background.

3. Focus on what you’ve achieved, not just what you did

Employers want problem-solvers, not just box-tickers. When you describe your past roles, include examples of the impact you made:

Did you reduce unplanned downtime?

Help improve machine performance or reliability?

Lead a shutdown or installation safely and on time?

Even one strong bullet point per role helps show your value.

4. Tailor your CV for the job

If you’re applying for a mechanical fitter role on a COMAH site, highlight any shutdown work, permit-to-work systems, or site safety training.
If you’re applying for a permanent maintenance engineer position, focus on fault-finding, PPM schedules, and teamwork.

You don’t need to rewrite your whole CV, just adjust the emphasis.

5. Keep it clear, current, and easy to read

Your CV should be:

2–3 pages max

In reverse chronological order

Clear on dates, employers, and responsibilities

Free from big blocks of text or vague statements

Use headings, spacing, and bullet points to make it scannable, your next employer may only spend 30 seconds on it initially.

Final thoughts

A great mechanical engineering CV shows more than just experience, it shows readiness, professionalism, and a clear understanding of your trade.

At Technical Partners, we help candidates fine-tune their CVs every day, making sure they reflect not just your background, but your future potential.

Want help shaping your CV?

Get in touch

In today’s competitive job market, having an outdated CV can be a major hindrance to landing your dream role. As a professional recruitment specialist business, we understand this perhaps more than others; the importance of a well-crafted, current CV that showcases your skills, achievements, and experiences effectively.

With the abundance of job boards and candidate databases at our disposal, recruiters are inundated with resumes. To stand out from the crowd, it’s crucial to keep your CV fresh and relevant. Here are some tips to help you stay ahead of the game:

1. Highlight new skills: As you progress in your career, make sure to update your CV regularly to reflect any new skills, certifications, or competencies you’ve acquired. This demonstrates your commitment to professional growth and staying relevant in your field.

2. Update responsibilities: As your role evolves and you take on additional responsibilities, don’t hesitate to reflect these changes on your CV. Hiring managers and recruiters want to see the progression and growth in your career.

3. Showcase achievements: While listing your skills and responsibilities is important, it’s equally crucial to highlight your achievements and the impact you’ve made in your previous roles. Quantify your achievements with measurable results or metrics to substantiate your claims.

4. Maintain consistency: Instead of waiting until the last minute, make it a habit to update your CV regularly, perhaps quarterly. This ensures that you don’t miss out on any important details and makes the process less daunting when the time comes to apply for a new opportunity.

5. Tailor your CV: When applying for a specific role, take the time to tailor your CV to highlight the most relevant skills, experiences, and achievements that align with the job requirements. This personalised approach can significantly increase your chances of grabbing the recruiter’s attention.

Remember, an outdated CV can be a red flag for potential employers and recruiters, signalling a lack of motivation or ambition. By keeping your CV current and relevant, you not only increase your chances of being noticed but also demonstrate your professionalism and commitment to your career.

At Technical Partners, we understand the importance of a well-crafted CV in securing the right opportunities for our candidates. Partner with us, and let our expertise guide you in presenting your best self to potential employers.

Contact us or view our available job vacancies here.
